OCN accreditation can play a pivotal role in supporting the development
of high quality, learner centred, flexible Basic Skills provision
which is mapped against the new Basic Skills Curriculum.
OCNKM Basic Skills Framework
Member organisations can (subject to approval from the OCN) use
our regional Basic Skills Framework to register and offer the NOCN
Entry Level Qualifications in Literacy & Numeracy. Click here
to download a copy of the Basic
Skills Framework. Please contact a Development Officer if you
wish to use this Framework.
OCNKM Basic Skills Forum
OCNKM hosts a regular Basic Skills Forum which aims to meet 3 times
a year. The Forum offers a chance for basic skills practitioners
to meet and discuss issues and developments which are relevant to
their work. We try to invite guest speakers and explore potential
OCN developments for the basic skills area. If you would like to
join this forum please contact Angela Joyce (OCNKM Senior Development

NOCN Qualification Development (Entry)
NOCN has developed Basic Skills Qualifications within the QCA Qualifications
Framework in the following areas:

These are available for use now. A full set of NOCN differentiated
Entry Level units in Literacy and Numeracy are already available
for use in regional programmes. For further details see the NOCN
web site or contact OCNKM.
NOCN Qualifications (Levels 1 &2)
In 2002-03 NOCN is developing Literacy & Numeracy Qualifications
at Levels 1 & 2. These will be achieved by completion of online
tests delivered via the Learn Direct network in the UK.
The units to support these qualifications are already available
for use in programmes. They are fully mapped against the national
standards and bench marked assessments will be available in the
Autumn of 2002. Ask OCNKM for further details.

Regional OCN Basic Skills Developments
OCNs are developing regional programmes for basic skills which
are mapped against the Basic Skills standards. The North East Midlands
OCN has commissioned a extensive basic skills programme called Skills
for Learning & Life. Further details are provided below.
Members in Kent can use this programme NOW subject to an initial
purchase fee of £50 for the master document.

Ready made Basic Skills Programme

Skills for Learning and
Life
~ an off-the-shelf programme
designed for learners of Basic Skills ~
~ mapped to the new Core Curriculum in Adult Literacy and
Numeracy ~
This Open College Network
Programme has been designed by experienced and qualified practitioners
to meet the demands of the new Core Curriculum which is based
on the Moser standards for Literacy and Numeracy, and was
commissioned by the North East Midlands Open College Network
(NEMOCN).

The pack contains:
- a generic programme document which specifies the minimum
requirements to run this programme in your organisation. Additional,
local information is required where indicated in the document.
- a set of units in Literacy and Numeracy which have been
mapped to the new Core Curriculum. Each unit has a 'Unit Mapping'
sheet which clearly identifies and reference these links. An additional
set of structured spelling units is also included.
- sample 'Method of Delivery and Assessment for Units'
detailing assessment methods, evidence of achievement and delivery
methods. Organisations may either adopt these or provide their
own versions detailing local arrangements to be agreed with the
OCN.
- sample Progress Record sheets, the style/layout of which
may be used for recording Learner achievements, and can accompany
the evidence in a learner's portfolio.
