Units & Unit Writing
This page:
This page provides you with a starting point for finding and writing
OCN Units.
Existing OCN Units
There are many existing OCN Units which centres might want to use
in programmes:
- National Open College Network
Units: these come
from both NOCN Qualifications and can be accessed from the NOCN
Qualifications Guides at the NOCN web site. You will need a user
name and password to access the qualification guides- contact
OCNKM office for details.
- Searchable OCN Unit Library
- this is an open access resource offered by a group of OCNs (Greater
Manchester OCN, North Wales OCN, South East Wales OCN, and South
West Wales OCN). You simply need to give your email address to
have access to this bank of units. Note that this contains
a wide range of units some of which may not be recommended by
OCNKM for use in programmes - contact an OCNKM Development Officer
before finally incorporating these units in a programme.
When using existing units it is very important that you obtain
the unit code and include this in your submission to OCN Kent &
Medway. If there is more than one code for a unit please include
both as one will probably be a local database code and the other
will be an NOCN code.

Writing New Units
Where possible we advise using existing OCN validated units within
new programmes (either NOCN or local OCN validated), however if
no suitable unit can be found then with support from OCNKM a new
unit(s) can be written.
An OCN Development Officer will provide support to staff in centres
who decide to write new units as a part of their programme submissions.
Please contact OCNKM for further
help with unit writing.
